Home Cookin'
Boys Varsity Squad Dominates MHS Invitational
On a day that was nearly-perfect for running, MHS
took a salty chomp out of the perennially tough Warner Park cross
country course.
All seven boys varsity runners set Warner Park PR's
en route to dominating the boys' varsity division. The Indians
scored 44 points to runner-up Lawrence's 101.
It is believed to be the first time in 20 years that
the boys have won the home invitational.
The score, however, doesn't tell the whole story of
what is a stellar start for the MHS boys.
Showing signs of what a good summer's work will do,
Graham Armstrong finished third overall in a time of 16:14. Peter
Ramundo followed closely, nabbing 5th place in 16:26.
Seven MHS runners finished in 17:04 or better,
including Scott Nelson (9th, 16:43); Zach Retta (11th, 16:49); Tyler
Smith (16th, 16:57); Alonzo Cordova (21st, 17:04); and Greg Doman
(22nd, 17:04). The 1-5 pack time was 43 seconds, and 1-7 was an
impressive 50 seconds.
Marley Crusch ran just seven seconds off the
previous Warner Park course record for 4K, finishing second in the
girls varsity chase in 14:48. It was a great time and a great start
for the Class 6A 2-mile champion in track and field last Spring.
Super freshman Brianna Heikenen ran poised and
smart, finishing 6th in an impressive 15:34. She was followed
closely by senior Brooke Grieger (7th, 15:46). Emily Beach (29th,
16:43) and Hannah Saville (33rd, 16:56) rounded out the team's
second place finish.
Also for MHS' varsity girls, newcomer Abby Wilson
clocked 16:59 for 35th place, and Anya Throne (running in her
first-ever varsity race) was 36th in 17:00.
The JV boys also won a team title, scoring 53 points
to Washburn Rural's 83. Lorenz Bossman and Colin Rosenow led the way
in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, with times of 18:07 and 18:15.
The JV girls finished third with 61 points, and the
'C' team boys were second with 59 points. Amanda Osarczuk placed 3rd
(13:13) and Laura Jevons was 5th (13:15) to lead the JV girls;
freshman Daniel St. Amand (11:57) placed 4th, Chris Davis (12:00)
was 9th, and Christopher Ivey (12:01) placed 10th to lead the 'C'
teamers.
The Indians will hope to build on their early-season
momentum when they run in the Emporia Invitational next Saturday,
Sept. 13. Races get started at 9 a.m. at Jones Park.
